2017 Adrenaline Film Project Applications for Filmmaking Teams Now Open, Deadline to Apply Sept 29 

Virginia Film Festival’s Popular, Highly-Caffeinated 72-Hour Film Competition Moves out of Festival Weekend, to The Paramount Theater

Public Screening and Award Presentation Set for Saturday October 21 

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (SEPTEMBER 7, 2017) One of the Virginia Film Festival’s longest-running and most popular events is getting its own spotlight this year that will allow more people than ever to experience its particular brand of highly-caffeinated filmmaking magic.

The Adrenaline Film Project (AFP) is moving out of the Festival proper and heading downtown to host its annual competitive screening and awards presentations on Saturday, October 21 at 7:00 PM at The Paramount Theater. Also new this year, the winners of the jury, mentor, audience, and acting awards will receive a cash prize and industry badges to the 2017 Virginia Film Festival.

Applications for interested filmmaking teams are now being accepted, and the deadline to apply is 5:00 PM on Friday, September 29. For information about how to apply as a filmmaker, actor, or composer, visit www.virginiafilmfestival.org/adrenaline/.

AFP is a 72-hour guerrilla filmmaking adventure in which 10-12 teams of filmmakers compete for cash prizes by writing, shooting, editing, and screening their own 3-5 minute films with guidance from a team of highly accomplished mentors from across the industry. Mentors assign teams a genre, line of dialogue, and prop that they must incorporate into their short films. Previous winners have found success in their acceptances to film schools, submissions to Sundance, involvement in the creation of popular movies and television shows, and with starting their own production companies.

Charlottesville native and acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Wadlow, who co-founded AFP and wrote and directed True Memoirs of an International Assassin and Kick Ass 2, will return as lead mentor. Wadlow will be joined by three-time Adrenaline alum Ben Haslup, who produces specials on National Geographic and The Discovery Channel, including some of the highest rated Shark Week episodes of all time, and Han West, a UVA alum who produced Lemon and Oh Lucy!

“Over its 13 remarkable years, the Adrenaline Film Project has earned a strong and dedicated following and become one of the signature events of the VFF,” said Jody Kielbasa, Director of the Virginia Film Festival and Vice Provost for the Arts at the University of Virginia. “For some years now, we have been looking for ways to give AFP even more of the attention it deserves and one of the ways we can do that is by taking it out of the jam-packed four days of the Festival and giving it a high-profile showcase at The Paramount Theater, which has the potential of hosting nearly double the event’s attendance. We look forward to sharing one of the Festival’s most unique and popular events with more people than ever before, and to creating a dynamic lead-in for the Festival as we celebrate our 30th year.”

All completed 2017 AFP films will also be re-screened during the 2017 Virginia Film Festival, which takes place November 9-12. Tickets for the culminating public screening on October 21 will go on sale through The Paramount Theater on September 22.
