Two Additional Screenings for 2019 Year-Round Film Series

Charlottesville, VA – May 22, 2019 – The Virginia Film Festival has announced two additional titles for its 2019 VAFF at Violet Crown film series, presented in partnership with Violet Crown Charlottesville.

The Virginia Film Festival is a program of the University of Virginia, with support from the Office of the Provost and Vice Provost for the Arts.

The newly-announced titles for the VAFF at Violet Crown series are Them That Follow (June 18); and Diamantino (July 16). All screenings in the series will start at 7:30 PM, and tickets will be available one month prior to the screening date at violetcrown.com.

Them That Follow, set in the wilderness of Appalachia, follows members of an isolated community of Pentecostal snake handlers led by Pastor Lemuel (Walton Goggins) who risk their lives each Sunday to attest themselves before God. Lemuel’s daughter (Alice Englert) prepares for her upcoming wedding while scrambling to hide a secret relationship that has the potential to drive her father’s church to ruin. Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman, Jim Gaffigan, Thomas Mann, Kaitlyn Dever, and Lewis Pullman also star in this feature debut from writer-directors Britt Poulton and Dan Madison Savage. The film is a thrilling, poignant look at a misunderstood community where morality and belief are not always aligned, and where the consequences can be devastating when faith is stretched to a breaking point

Diamantino, the world’s premiere soccer star (Carloto Cotta), loses his special touch and ends his career in public disgrace. Searching for a new purpose, the Portuguese icon sets out on a delirious odyssey where he confronts neo-fascism, the refugee crisis, genetic modification, abuse at the hands of his evil twin sisters, and a hunt for the source of genius. Both a political satire and a sci-fi fantasy, the chaotic nature of the film reflects the growing disorder in the world today. This deranged and hilarious feature debut from filmmakers Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt won the Grand Prix Award at the 2018 Cannes Critics’ Week.
