2016. USA. 114 min
Director: Bob Hercules, Rita Coburn Whack Featuring: Maya Angelou, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Common, Oprah Winfrey, Cicely Tyson, Alfre Woodard
The first feature-length documentary focusing on Maya Angelou, this film peers into her many lives as a poet, writer, performer, activist, and cultural icon. Following her life as it intersects with the Civil Rights movement, the Harlem Writers Guild, the New Africa movement, and the women’s movement, the film illuminates Angelou’s distinct impact on America using rare archival footage. Through Angelou’s own voice and the voices of others, this film reflects on how the events of history, culture, and the arts shaped her life and how she, in turn, helped to shape the lives of many people through her writing and activism. Discussion with director Rita Coburn-Whack, moderated by Joe Fab
