U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize, Sundance
At once a beautiful homage to the rich tradition and legacy of Black farmers in America, and a stark warning of the dangers they face today. Black-owned farms in the United States are at numbers not seen since the early 20th Century, due in part to discriminatory lending practices and the pressures of industrial agriculture.
Brittany Shine makes a stunning directorial debut, employing luminous black-and-white cinematography and a richly textured sound design to create an intimate and meditative portrait of this way of life in a way that captures its simplicity and tenderness while contrasting it with the sobering realities and precarious future they face today.
