It’s 1977, and Marcelo (Wagner Moura, Narcos) is an academic on the run, fleeing from a mysterious past. He arrives in Recife during Carnival, hoping to find refuge and reunite with his young son, only to discover the city is far from safe.

Through humor and a brutal severity, the film lays bare the suppressive dictatorship that defined that era of the country–doing so with a visual and narrative flair that cements Kleber Mendonça Filho as one of contemporary cinema’s most daring storytellers.
