Riding the waves of love takes determination, especially for the two lovesick teenagers at the heart of director Phuong Mai Nguyen’s debut feature. Rendered in tantalizing watercolor-styled animation, the film tells the story of friendship, partnership, and love between Kristen, a fearless surfer voiced by Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and AJ, a shy skateboarder voiced by Will Sharpe (A Real Pain).  

When Kristen is struck with a terminal illness, the two must navigate their growing connection in the face of tragedy. Adapted from AJ Dungo’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name, this sun-soaked southern California-based tale is a heartfelt ode to their devotion to the ocean, the waves, and each other.
