Nina Roza

Nina Roza: Woman in ornate dress and flower crown kneels before seated woman.

Official Oscar© Selection—Canada

Mihail fled Bulgaria in the ‘90s after the death of his wife, raising his young daughter Roza alone, in Montreal. Far from his native culture and painful memories, he built a new life for himself, one steeped in French and contemporary art. A specialist in the field, he is commissioned by a collector to authenticate the work of an eight-year-old Bulgarian girl, Nina, whose paintings have gone viral online.

Feeling apprehensive to return, his daughter’s wish to preserve their Bulgarian heritage pushes Mihail to overcome his reluctance and face the country he left behind. The journey towards meeting Nina and her cosmic artwork stirs up old ghosts and internal strife. While unraveling the mystery of her talent, he must also tackle the ethical weight of disrupting her life. What emerges is a cathartic exploration of life, art, and the people who inhabit both.

“Cosmic, compelling, and impressionistic.”
