Rose stages a provocative exploration of masculinity in 17th-century Germany following the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War. Sandra Hüller (Project Hail Mary) transforms into a mysterious veteran who returns from battle claiming to be the rightful heir to a Protestant village manor. His name and identity are unknown, but his ambitions of respect and honor are ever-present. As Rose acquires land, a wife, and a child, he constructs the life of an ideal man of the era, probing the history of male-presenting women and what truly defines a man.
