THE BLACK SEA

After falling victim to a catfishing scheme, Khalid (Derrick B. Harden), a charismatic New Yorker, finds himself stranded in a coastal Bulgarian town. He is the only Black man in sight, his passport has been stolen and he has little cash. Using his warmth and charisma to win over the locals, Khalid finds work and gradually integrates himself into the community.
Crystal Moselle (Wolfpack, Skate Kitchen) co-directs with actor/rapper Harden, blending fact and fiction to upend the fish-out-of-water story. Black Sea is a compelling exploration of resilience, identity, and the unexpected ways we find belonging in unfamiliar worlds.
Introduction by Jülide Etem (UVA)
“A cinematic slam poem about how shattered dreams lead people
to become castaways, or refugees, or immigrants.”
-Ryan Lattanzio, Indiewire
