Described by Estonian filmmaker Sander Maranas as “Monty Python meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets…Les Misérables,” this DIY passion project is a blood-drenched murder-packed musical extravaganza about two lovers split up by a chainsaw.

A guerrilla filmmaking effort more than ten years in the making, Chainsaws Were Singing combines inventive camerawork and slapstick-inspired editing with a decidedly absurdist tone. Putting the blood-red cherry on top of the gory, cartoon-like violent proceedings is an ear-worm-packed musical score whose roots are entwined with those of horror-musical classic Little Shop of Horrors (with the inspired addition of a chainsaw solo that alone is worth the price of admission).

“Ultra silly, heckin’ gory, and brilliantly dumb…an absolutely bonkers Slapstick-Slasher-Musical.”
-Jonathan Dehaan, Nightmare on Film Street

“There’s plenty to ogle and admire, from insane practical effects and a penchant for as much blood as possible. Sam Raimi would be proud.”
-Bee Delores, B-sides & Badlands
