Thirty years in the making, Famous Nathan chronicles the personal and public history of Nathan’s Famous of Coney Island, the iconic hotdog eatery founded in 1916 by director Lloyd Handwerker’s grandfather Nathan Handwerker. A kaleidoscopic blend of home movies, historic and familial archives, never-before heard recordings, and revealing, often-conflicting interviews with family, friends, and employees unfolds an endearing tale of the Polish immigrant experience transitioning into the American dream. More than just the incredible story of a generous yet domineering man who built an institution out of a hotdog cart, this documentary elucidates the entanglement of the Handwerker’s personal family history and the fabric of New York City.
