Girlhood
Oppressed by her family at home, dead-end school prospects, and a boys’ law that rules the neighborhood, Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of three free-spirited girls. She changes her name and style to join their lively yet gritty girl-gang known for intimidation and mischief in their working class neighborhood outside Paris. Director Céline Sciamma uses this coming of age story with a touch of romance to delve beneath these girls’ exterior to explore the volatile, potentially dangerous energy in these gangs, serving as surrogate families. This film paints an intimate portrait of a girl desperately searching for a path to personal freedom.
