In 1892, Army Captain Joseph J. Blocker (Christian Bale) is ordered to escort an ailing long-time prisoner, Chief Yellow Hawk, and his family back to his Cheyenne homeland to die. Blocker treats his prisoners with savagery fueled by hated, and Chief Yellow Hawk becomes his mortal enemy. Based on a manuscript by the late Donald Stewart (The Hunt for the Red October), this gritty, brutal new western from director Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace) is a meditation on hatred and how a soul can be forged by violence.
