How to Smell a Rose: A Visit with Ricky Leacock at his Farm in Normandy documents Les Blank’s visit with the legendary cofounder of Direct Cinema, Richard Leacock, at his farm in Normandy, France. In the 1960s Leacock and his colleagues revolutionized documentary filmmaking. He abandoned the impediments of cumbersome equipment in favor of technical innovations which helped lead to the birth of America’s cinema vérité. Codirector Gina Leibrecht recorded conversations with Leacock about his life, his work, and even his other passion: cooking. In this illuminating documentary, Leacock walks through the French countryside and shares memorable moments from his career.
