Monster

Usually quiet and reserved, young Minato has begun to act strangely; he claims to be a monster whose head has been swapped with a pig. When his mother, Saori, discovers Minato’s teacher is responsible for these wild ideas, she demands an explanation from his school. A fight between Saori and school officials escalates, and Mr. Hori accuses Minato of bullying one of his classmates, Yori. Rumors and reality are intertwined as the narrative fluctuates between flashbacks and point-of-view shifts following Minato and Yori’s complicated yet intricate relationship.

Japanese Director Kore-eda Hirokazu (Broker, Shoplifters) returns to his homeland to create a beautiful and morally complex narrative exploring boyhood and the treacherous, opaque tolls of adolescence.
