Mountains May Depart
Beginning in 1999, Mountains May Depart highlights China’s exponential economic development and the subsequent changes in interpersonal relationships that follow. Childhood friends Liangzi and Zhang are both in love with Tao. She marries Zhang, the wealthier suitor and they have a son named Dollar. Following the later divorce, Dollar immigrates to Australia with his father, who has become a business magnate. By 2025, 19-year-old Dollar no longer speaks Chinese and can barely communicate with his now bankrupt father. With a striking performance by Zhao Tao, director Jia Zhangke’s ambitious work evolves in mysterious and staggering ways. Introduction by Aynne Kokas (U.Va.)
