SABBATH QUEEN

Amichai Lau-Lavie comes from 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis, including the Chief Rabbis of Israel, but he is also a queer bio-dad and the founder of Lab/Shul: a welcoming, artistic, experimental congregation. Sabbath Queen juxtaposes the progressiveness of Lau-Lauvie’s life in New York after moving away from Israel with his disappointed brother, who upholds their family traditions over decades that include crucial periods of international historical events such as the 1990s AIDS crisis and 2014 footage of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Amichai grapples with this passed down loyalty to the status quo and the internal morals he strongly believes in– and wants to dismantle this conservative Judaism from the inside, as a rabbi. The film is a life story of identity, and questions who you were meant to be, who you want to become, and what you want to fight for–especially as a Jewish person in the 21st century.
