Legendary alto jazz saxophonist Frank Morgan showed promise from an early age, taken under master Charlie “Bird” Parker’s wing as a teenager. Welcomed into the big band environment steeped in illicit drug use, he picked up more than just musical advice from his mentors. After Bird passed on, Morgan tumbled into a downward spiral fueled by lack of creative direction and an opiate addiction. Various cons and crimes kept him popping in and out of jail for thirty years, wavering between relapse and rehab. An emotional tribute concert at the San Quentin, California state prison forms the backbone of this powerful piece layered with beautiful jazz and personal accounts from his family members and fellow musicians. Discussion with director NC Heikin, Rosalinda Kolb, and Reggie Marshall
