The Holdovers

Most American children spend winter break at home with their families, but at Barton Academy, an unfortunate few must stay behind, spending the “vacation” on the campus of their boarding school. In the latest film from acclaimed director Alexander Payne (Election, Nebraska), their curmudgeonly teacher, Mr. Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) is tasked with staying behind to ensure no one in this group of “Holdovers” wrecks the school.

Mr. Hunham finds himself dealing with a particularly troubled but intelligent student named Angus who has lost his father. Misfits and outcasts alike, the students, their teacher, and the school’s grieving but light-hearted head cook forge unexpected bonds in this story of how family extends far beyond the people at our holiday tables.

Preceded by a short presentation with Virginia Film Office director Andy Edmunds honoring the winners of the 2023 Virginia Screenwriting Competition
