The Lost Daughter
Based on the novel by Elena Ferrante, Leda (Olivia Colman) is a middle-aged divorcée devoted to her work as an English teacher and her two children. When her children go to be with their father, she decides to take a vacation to a small coastal town in southern Greece, hoping to take a break from her life. Over the course of her stay, she encounters a family whose brash and overwhelming presence forces Leda to reflect on her own life. When the daughter of the family goes missing, Leda is forced to remember the traumas of her own childhood and her time as a young mother. The directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Lost Daughter is an exploration of the difficulties of motherhood and the dangers of leaving one’s past unsettled.
