The Taste of Things
Official Oscar© Selection—France | 2023 Cannes Film Festival Winner: Best Director, Trân Anh Hùng
Dodin Bouffant, a renowned chef, has lived with his personal cook, the highly skilled Eugenie, for almost twenty years. Starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel (married, decades ago, in real life), the story winds through two decades of the pair working in close tandem, as friends, occasional lovers, and always, gourmands. Their mutual infatuation gives rise to incredible dishes, each more delectable than the next, impressing even the world’s most celebrated chefs.
Loosely based upon Marcel Rouff’s 1924 novel La Passion de Dodin-Bouffant, Gourmet, this sumptious narrative explores intertwined themes of sensuality, passion, food, and romance, highlighting the complex dynamics of two lovers in 19th-century France. Director Trân Anh Hùng (The Scent of Green Papaya) stuns with this exceptional and meticulously crafted film.
Introduction by Alison Murray Levine (UVA).
“Food is a gift of love here – and romance courses through this delightful film.”
