They Shot the Piano Player
This animated film follows journalist Jeff Harris (voiced by Jeff Goldblum) as he set out in 2010 to write a book about the history of the Latino movement Boss Nova and stumbled upon a name he had never encountered before: Francisco Tenório Júnior, a remarkable Brazilian pianist. As he delved deeper into Tenório Jr.’s story, Harris uncovered a mysterious disappearance in 1976, amid Argentina’s escalating military dictatorship. Intrigued by this discovery, Harris travels to Rio de Janeiro to expand his research, conducting interviews with some of Brazil’s most esteemed musicians, including João Gilberto and Caetano Veloso. Set to a vibrant Bossa Nova soundtrack, this animated documentary and political thriller vividly portrays the brief moments of artistic freedom that thrived in 1960s and 1970s Latin America, paying tribute to the creative forces that fueled the influential musical revolution of that era.
