During the day, Sol helps her family where she can at her Grandfather’s home, especially as her aunts prepare a surprise birthday party for her father, Tonatiuh. Life is predictable, understandable, and as complete for a seven-year-old as it can get. As dusk settles in, however, the stability of her world blurs and ends up changing drastically forever. With the fading of daylight, the familiar order and restraint Sol was raised in begins to dissolve. Cracks form within Sol’s current life and family bonds shatter. Whether she is ready or not for her world to shift, Sol learns to embrace the essence of letting go and treasuring the experience of life. Sincere and poignant, Totém captures the bittersweet reality of the ties that bind and break within a family as life inevitably releases to death.
