In the Najayo Prison in the Dominican Republic, inmates communicate with the female prison next door by “pecking” messages with their hands. When Julian is incarcerated for robbery, he learns this after making a tenuous alliance with the violent but powerful Manaury. After being sentenced to solitary confinement, Manaury asks Julian to send messages to his girlfriend Yanelly in the other prison. Julian quickly falls for Yanelly, and the two begin a passionate and secretive relationship, risking severe punishment if they are discovered. This film was selected as the Dominican Republic’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
