Tyler Coates is a writer and entertainment journalist whose work has appeared nationally in numerous publications, including Columbia Journalism Review, Entertainment Weekly, Men’s Journal, Slate, Town & Country, Wired, and The Village Voice.

Coates is a constant presence in the awards space, appearing as a frequent guest on The Ankler’s Prestige Junkie podcast, writing the Considerations column for Filmmaker Magazine, and hosting and moderating FYC events. Coates previously served as the awards editor at The Hollywood Reporter, where he oversaw coverage of the Oscars and Emmy races from 2022-2024 and was nominated for a SoCal Journalism Award.

Coates also cohosts DC Studios Showcase, the official podcast from DC Studios, and has worked as an editorial consultant and strategist for clients like Andscape, Hulu, Lionsgate, Peacock, and others.

Prior to THR, Coates was the culture editor at Esquire, the founding deputy editor at Decider, and deputy editor at Flavorwire.

A native of Montross in the Northern Neck of Virginia, Coates first attended the Virginia Film Festival as a senior in high school and later as a student at James Madison University, where he graduated in 2005 with a B.A. in English. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his partner John and their dog Laurie.
