Due to unforeseen circumstances, Anaita Wali Zadi, is no longer able to join us for this screening.

Beautiful and troubled Donya (Anaita Wali Zada), an Afghan translator who used to work with the U.S. government, has trouble sleeping. She lives by herself in Fremont, California, in a building with other Afghan immigrants and often dines alone at a local restaurant watching soap operas. Her routine changes when she’s promoted to writing the fortunes at her job at a fortune cookie factory in the city.

Zada shines in her debut, with support from Gregg Turkington as a Jack London-obsessed psychiatrist and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) as a sweet-natured mechanic.

“Strikes a beautiful tone with a deadpan sense of humor, aided by Anaita Wali Zada’s quietly poignant performance”
– Tomris Laffly, Variety

“A drama with a spare, wry tone that belies its earnest and ample substance.”
– Richard Brody, New Yorker
