Sound Of Falling

Official Oscar© Selection—Germany
Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival

The Sound of Falling follows four generations of girls who grow up on the same farm in the Altmark region of northern Germany. Despite being from distinct historical periods, the four girls–Alma in the early 20th century, Erika in the 1940s, Angelika in the 1980s, and Lenka in the present–become entwined through trauma and hardship. The farm harbors secrets within and outside its walls, and the women slowly uncover them.

As each of the women confront different faces of violence and cruelty, they carry traces of the pain and joy of their ancestors and fight to carve their own paths. Director Mascha Schilinski’s second film artfully melts time as each woman’s story dissolves into one through snapshots of poetry, brutality, and timeless tenderness.

“Intoxicating and unnerving, refusing easy explanations
as it immerses viewers in a dreamlike atmosphere.”

-Peter Howell, Toronto Star

“An astonishing work…feels like an act of psychic transmission”
-Alison Willmore, Vulture
