The Chaplain & The Doctor

Doctor Jessica Zitter’s feature-length documentary debut focuses on an unlikely friendship between herself, a Jewish doctor, and Betty Clark, an African American chaplain. While it’s uncommon for doctors and chaplains to cross paths, the women bonded over years of working together, united in their belief that empathetic palliative care involves a commitment to patients that goes beyond their symptoms.
When Clark, now 80, begins experiencing health issues, Zitter steps in and sees firsthand the experience that patients of color face when advocating for themselves. Beneath the moving exploration of history, medical bias, and spirituality, the beating heart of the film lies in a friendship that provides a deeply personal glimpse into the importance of upending assumptions by taking the time to listen.
