Coded Bias
Director Shalini Kantayya explores two major questions at the forefront of modern society: What does it mean when artificial intelligence increasingly governs our liberties? And what are the consequences for the people AI is biased against? This gripping documentary follows the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that most facial-recognition software frequently fails to identify darker-skinned faces and women’s faces. What emerges is a group of rebels and misfits–female mathematicians and data scientists–who are fighting for these technologies’ ethical use.
