After losing her husband and the economic collapse of her small mining town in rural Nevada, Fern, a stoic 61-year-old woman, becomes a modern-day nomad, packing up her van and setting off on the road to explore life outside of conventional society. What unfolds is a stunning portrait of a journey to self-reclamation and redefinition of community, all set against the backdrop of the American West. Based on Jessica Bruder’s 2017 nonfiction book about wandering older Americans, Nomadland offers an authentic, compassionate narrative of those living on the American margins.
