CLOSING NIGHT FILM
THE ROOM NEXT DOOR
Golden Lion for Best Film, Venice Film Festival
Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter. Eventually, their lives took different courses, and they lost touch.
Rekindling their friendship after years apart, the two immediately click—resuming old patterns of gentle teasing, reminiscing over shared literary tastes, philosophy, a mutual love of the movies, and even shared ex-lovers. When Martha makes an unorthodox request of Ingrid, the two are forced to navigate a serious test to their lifelong bond.
Pedro Almodóvar (whose masterpiece Talk to Her also screens at the Festival) an iconic filmmaker at the height of his power, adapts Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through, in the process seamlessly shifting languages for his English-language feature length debut. Here we witness him elevating to new heights his penchant for melodrama, bold colors, astounding art direction, and richly layered narrative.
“Stunning in all elements of design and performance… another wonderful entry among Almodóvar’s filmography”

“A language of pleasure and beauty that reminds us how great it is to be alive.”
