THE SHEPHERD AND THE BEAR

Set against the stunning backdrop of the French Pyrenees, The Shepherd and the Bear delves into the tensions arising from the reintroduction of brown bears into a traditional shepherding community. The narrative centers on an aging shepherd who struggles to find a successor as bears increasingly threaten his flock. At the same time, a teenage boy develops a fascination with tracking the bears, becoming drawn to their strength.
As these two characters navigate their challenges, the film paints a rich portrait of a community at a crossroads. With its captivating cinematography and engaging storytelling, this contemporary folktale explores the fragile connection between humanity and a threatened natural world. Scored by French composer Amine Bouhafa (Four Daughters), The Shepherd and the Bear marks Director Max Keegan’s debut feature. Keegan paints a visually and sonically stunning portrait of the delicate balance between preserving cultural heritage and adapting to the realities of a changing environment.
This film is part of the Nature and Environment Series presented by Southern Environmental Law Center.
