WILFRED BUCK
Wilfred Buck – a beloved spiritual guide and effervescent Elder from the Cree nation – is known best for his extensive ancestral knowledge of the sky and the stars. A science facilitator for the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre, his life’s work has been translating science into the language and lore of Indigenous astronomy that has endured for generations.
Based on the memoir I Have Lived Four Lives, the film is a “reality fiction” that travels through the past and present to tell Buck’s story in its entirety, starting with his days as a young boy on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation reserve when he was first captivated by the sublimity of the night sky. A deeply engaging docudrama, Wilfred Buck is an eye-opening account of an unconventional life of science, and tells a greater story of a man’s resilience in the face of racism, addiction, and systematic displacement.
