THE BITTER PILL

As the opioid epidemic devastates his hometown, West Virginian attorney Paul Farrell Jr. reaches a breaking point. Determined to hold major pharmaceutical companies accountable, Farrell takes an unprecedented step by filing a civil suit in his county, aiming to secure justice for those suffering from addiction.
The battle is intensely personal—West Virginia has the highest overdose rate in the nation, and in Farrell’s Cabell County, 20% of babies are born addicted. As his legal strategy gains traction nationwide, the case escalates into the largest civil litigation in U.S. history. Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker (Gleason) and Charlottesville native Clay Tweel, The Bitter Pill captures the relentless courage of a man and his community as they rally to fight for a better future.
Discussion with director Clay Tweel and producers Shannon Riggs and Tim Grant. Moderated by Nathan Lee (Film Comment). Introduction by Margaret Foster Riley (UVA).
